I am loving the Unjammed Reflections that you are recording. This one made me think about the book Never Enough by Jennifer Breheny Wallace. She writes about how many kids feel constant pressure to perform and how even well-intentioned encouragement can add to that weight.
I know when I was in the classroom, I was sometimes guilty of focusing only on the student sitting in front of me and forgetting that they had five or six other teachers doing the same thing. Your reflection was a good reminder that while challenging students matters, it works best when it comes from a place of knowing them as people first.
The more we understand what each student is carrying, the better we can make our challenges feel like a belief in their potential rather than just one more demand. Thank you for continuing to share these reflections. They always give me something to think about.
